‘Deadpool’ Ends Its Domestic Run With A Ridiculous Pile Of Cash

Deadpool has been out on video for nearly six weeks, but it was still playing in some North American theaters until last week.

Now Fox has released the final tally for the film’s domestic box office as the movie ends its domestic run. After 18 weeks in theaters,Deadpool has grossed $363 million domestically (and the worldwide total is currently at $775.7 million).

This places Deadpool as the second highest domestic return of 2016 so far, second only to Captain America: Civil War‘s nearly $400 million take. And it’s the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2016 so far, behind the aforementioned Civil War along with Zootopia, The Jungle Book, and Batman V Superman rounding out the top five. And, amazingly, Deadpool was in that top five despite having a budget of only $58 million, despite being banned in China, despite being R-rated, and despite Fox turning down several characters for being “too expensive” until settling on — in one executive’s purported phrasing — “Negasonic, what?” as one of the leads.

To put that further into perspective, Deadpool is now the 62nd highest-grossing movie worldwide of all time, earning more money than other superhero fare including all of these:

  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • The Amazing Spider-Man
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • The Amazing Spider-Man 2
  • Man of Steel
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Iron Man 2
  • Iron Man
  • X-Men: The Last Stand
  • Thor

Dan already speculated as to why this R-rated underdog may have broken into the mainstream, but this author is still giving credit to all the pegging and chimichangas.
